Rollerbladers came from all over the northwest for the AIL event at The Skatebarn on March 27, 2010. Upon arrival all the skaters noticed all the new additions to the park including the wall ride/hitching post, the rainbow ledge, and the launch to the vert ramp. After seeing these new obstacles, everyone knew things were going to get crazy.

This year’s competition had nobody competing in the beginner category so it started off with the intermediate category. Lots of new faces to the AIL competition came out to skate. Each skater would be given two 60 second runs. All the skaters were amped up to show off what they could do. With Rob Inks as the MC; the comp started off with Jason Skiles linking tricks from the quarter pipe to grinding the entire bauer box. Next up were the Eremenco brothers Paul and Andrei. Both were linking multiple tricks and hitting switch ups on the bauer box. Next up were Peter Willock and Ben Murphy. Both linked a few tricks in their lines. After each person finished their lines scores were tallied up by judges Shain Lapointe, Rob Inks, and myself. Third place went to Ben Murphy. Second place went to Paul Eremenco. And first place went to Jason Skiles.

Now on to the main event; the advanced competition. This ran the same as the intermediate section, two 60 second runs. There were many more skaters in the advanced competition so things were much more difficult to judge. Things went crazy from here. Starting with Brandon Weller’s huge 540’s over the launch box to sweat stance down the shot gun rail. Then there was Chris Hoang linking trick after trick including pornstar 540 out on the bauer box. Jerry Brennan came through with big disasters to the A frame ledge in his run. Derek Macias flowed through the park even hitting the monster rainbow ledge. Chris Sullivan got even crazier with his 900 over the launch box and launching to the hitching post in his run. So many sick tricks went down it’s hard to think of them all! Everyone skated well but in the end there had to be a winner. Third place went Jerry Brennan. Second place went to Chris Hoang. And the winner was Chris Sullivan.

All in all it was an exciting competition and everyone skated hard. Every year there seems to be more and more kids competing at the AIL competition. We look forward to next year’s event. Special thanks goes out to Al at The Skatebarn and all the Skatebarn employees for making the event a success. Check out www.inlineleague.com for upcoming AIL events. Hope to see you next year! – Daniel Lee

Dozens of car loads of rollerbladers headed up to Woodward West for the first contest of the 2010Amateur Inline League season. The stage was set, and kids antsy and anxious after a long winter were poised to get their blade on. And blade they did. Rollerbladers came from as far away as Utah, Brazil, and Venezuala, and of course all over California, for the chance to compete in the AIL and skate the highly-regarded Hangar 18 park at Woodward West. Snow fell outside as the action inside began to heat up.

With the impromptu addition of the ‘PeeWee’ division to accommodate several of the youngest bladers, and the strongest ever showing in the 10 and Under Beginner’s division, the contest was underway. Organized by Pam and Richie Velasquez, announced by yours truly, and hosted byWoodward West, the day saw Vert, 10-15 Advancaed, 16 and Up Beginner/Intermediate, and 16 and Up Advanced disciplines. The ‘Everyday is Get Someone to Blade Day’ movement is in full swing, with blading classes at Woodward West put on by Richie Velasquez producing a surge of new young faces crossing over from hockey to compete in their first ever rollerblading contest at this AIL.

Over 100 rollerbladers turned out, and 75 of them took part in competitive skating. The main event is traditionally the 16 and Up Advanced division, and the March 13th event was no different. With a large field of over 20 bladers, after two 55 second runs on the main street course, which was modified slightly for this AIL, a winner was declared. Third place went to the talented Tyler Hest, second place went to the ramp local and rising star Damon Franklin, and first place to the hard hustling Rick Rodriguez.

In a totally unexpected turn of events, Pam Velasquez offered up $100 cash to the 16 and Up Advanced winner, and pro skater Rachard Johnson then upped the ante by throwing in $100 out of his own pocket, immediately boosting the significance of Rick Rodriguez’s victory by $200. So the 2010 AIL contest season got off to an exciting start. Scores of new young bladers, droves of the devoted, and a surprise cash infusion for the highest ranks. Check www.inlineleague.com for complete results and to get info on upcoming AIL contests that you and your friends can attend. —Matt Mickey
